Nag Panchami is a day devoted to the Nag Devta or the snake god in the Hindu tradition. Every year, this day is celebrated during the auspicious month of Sawan, according to the Hindu calendar. This year, Nag Panchami is on August 13. It's an important day for the devotees of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.
Snake idols made of clay are prepared and worshipped at home with milk, turmeric, grass, kumkum and flowers. Flowers and milk are kept near the burrows and holes where snakes live. People also keep a sculpture made of red soil or cow dung of the snake God near the main entrance of the house.
The festival of Nag Panchami began when Takshak, the king of snakes, stalked King Janamejaya's father Parikshit and killed him. To avenge his death, King Janamejaya conducted a yajna to eliminate the entire Naga caste.
