Avani Avittam, also known as Upakarma, is a highly sacred Hindu ritual observed by Brahmins. It marks the commencement of Vedic learning and involves the spiritual renewal of the sacred thread (Yajnopavita/Poonal), accompanied by purification rituals, Kamokarsheet Japam, and tarpanam to rishis and ancestors.
Avani Avittam commemorates Hayagriva Jayanti—the incarnation of Lord Vishnu as Lord Hayagriva, the God of knowledge, who restored the Vedas stolen by the asuras back to Lord Brahma. Devotees perform this ritual to cleanse past sins, seek forgiveness, and renew their commitment to righteous living and scriptural studies.
Avani Avittam is traditionally observed by Brahmin boys and men who have undergone the Upanayanam (sacred thread ceremony) and follow Vedic traditions. Unmarried, married, and elderly men all perform this ritual to reaffirm their spiritual duties.
Upakarma is performed on different dates depending on the Veda followed:
- Yajurveda Upakarma is performed on the Full Moon day (Pournami) in the Tamil month of Avani.
- Rigveda Upakarma is performed on Shravana nakshatra in the month of Shravana.
- Sama Veda Upakarma is observed on Hasta nakshatra on Dwitiya/Tritiya tithi after Shravan Amavasya.
The sacred thread (Poonal/Yajnopavita) consists of three strands, symbolizing three vows: duties toward ancestors, duties toward rishis (sages), and duties toward the gods. It represents self-discipline, spiritual awakening, and the continuous pursuit of knowledge and truth.
